Recent reports from August 26 indicate the road to the trailhead is suitable for all vehicles, though a bridge washout two miles beyond closes the highway at the winter gate, preventing further driving towards Johnston Ridge Observatory. Parking at the trailhead is ample, accommodating over 60 vehicles, and was notably uncrowded as of August 26. Be aware that the trail is largely exposed with very little shade, and ample water is recommended, especially if venturing onto the Boundary Trail.
