The trail offers excellent shrub-steppe scenery and panoramic views of the Yakima River Canyon, Mt. Adams, and Mt. Rainier. Wildflowers, particularly balsamroot and lupine, were prolific as of April 22 and still blooming in early April. The trail is generally exposed and can be hot, making late spring an ideal time to visit before the summer heat sets in. The hike is steep and can be slick due to gravelly terrain, especially when warming up. Parking is available at the Big Pines Recreation Site, with restrooms accessible across the road.
