Hikers recommend bringing boots for traction January 9 and poles for stability. Some sections of the trail are firm due to frozen ground, but others can be wet and muddy. Motorized vehicle use is prohibited until Spring, though some tracks have been visible. Views of the Olympics and Mt. Rainier are available, January 16. The short road to the parking lot off of Highway 8 was snow-covered in the morning but had mostly melted by the afternoon as of February 14, 2025. No other recent reports mention the road status, so it is assumed to be clear unless conditions have changed significantly since then.
The trail is described as very muddy with water running down some stretches and large puddles to navigate, as of January 9. This condition was also noted in January 16 and January 24, with hikers recommending sturdy boots and poles.
