Prior to this closure, trip reports from late July indicated that while the road was rough but passable, the trail itself presented obstacles. Hikers encountered trees down across the trail, difficult stream crossings, and sections that were muddy, wet, or overgrown. Most smaller streams were dry by late July, necessitating reliance on lakes and larger creeks for water. Bugs were not a significant issue.
