As of August 1, 2026, Mailbox Peak's new trail is in excellent condition, clear of snow and blowdowns, with wildflowers blooming. Parking can be competitive; the upper lot often fills by mid-morning, with overflow parking available on the road.
The final half-mile remains a steep, exposed challenge with no shade. Hikers have noted annoying bugs at the summit, particularly if food is left in the mailbox. Wildfire smoke has caused hazy views recently, though clear days offer expansive panoramas. Some reports mention precarious dead trees on the new trail (July 11). Trekking poles are highly recommended, especially for the descent. Remember to pack out all trash, including TP and waste.
